It is right to thank the many people who put all the hard work in that goes towards making a local cycling club like this run as it does.
There is a large section on our History Page that goes towards Johnny Helms for all his efforts for our club, so please do review that section when you can.
Clubs like this run for year after year with great success such as one of the clubs founder members Walter Pritchard who served as club treasurer from 1923 to 1947.
George Rhodes was timekeeper from 1923 until he went to live in Lincolnshire in 1946. Harry Whitham joined the club in the mid-1920s and was either social secretary or magazine secretary for most of his years until 1950. He organised many events and was always a leading entertainer at all the club’s social functions.
Stan Jones was minutes secretary and social secretary, organising the club dinner for approximately 50 years along with the help of long time club member and committee man Austin Morgan. Austin was well known in Warrington for his bike shop, and for his commitment to cycling and Warrington Road Club.
Stan Jones would provide the lead car for all the club’s road races and for many other clubs in the Manchester area. In addition he provided the same clubs with radio communications for both road races and time trials, and would provide water and food for year after year in many of the long time trial events for our riders. In 1998 he was awarded a R.T.T.C. Certificate of Merit. Pictured below is Stan Jones doing his party trick of riding backwards at a cafe stop, don’t try this at home…
Thanks to a few hard-working individual club members, History and Riders pages on our web site now has the most accurate collection of detail we’ve ever collected in one place. This details club records, trophies won, and our most successful riders and achievements as far back as 1926.
Special Thanks should go to Arthur Turner who recorded these wins throughout Warrington Road Club’s history and to Johnny Helms for writing the bulk of the information that the Club History and Riders and Records pages were built on. Many thanks to Harry, Alan and Dorothy Barker, Anne Stevenson, Brian Yuile, Alan Ottiwell, John Pressage, Thomas, John & Ian Haddock for time spent on recording data, collecting photographs, historical and inspirational information plus a large amount their personal time and thought that goes in to putting this all together in one place. We certainly hope it serves its purpose as a history of our club moving in to the present day.
We’d also like to thanks some of the people who have provided the photography on this web site as the visual element really helps to bring the site to life. Ellen Isherwood who turns up on our local races circuits in the north west each week has kindly granted permission for us to add in the racing pictures free of charge, many thanks for your efforts. Andy Jones from Cycling Weekly has also provided a number of photographs for the site when we had our ride with them in January 2018. Other thanks should go to Peter Lloyd, Paul Best, Adrian Japp of WVCC, James Russell who stand on roads in all sorts of weather taking photos so we can all have a look back in the comfort of our own homes. Your efforts are appreciated. Further thanks should go to members and former members mentioned in the above paragraph who have contributed with photographs as well.
